Eeeeeeh, Could Be.... (Picture Bugs Bunny in one of his famous stances)
Remember the days when you asked someone if they got your email? Even better, remember all the reasons people gave for not having read it. Those were the days...when we could ignore email until we had the time to reply - assuming we even wanted to reply. Based on a few "emergency" phone calls I've received over the past couple of weeks - it appears those days are gone for good.
Strange but true, I'm 99% convinced email has replaced the telephone and possibly even the mobile phone as our primary means of communications. The younger crowd likes to call it "texting" to make it sound different and cool. Call it what you want - send/receiving text, video, audio via electronic means is still "email" in my book.
The difference I have noticed recently is --- it is now "EMAIL!" and not email or eMail. People calling in a panic because the server, network, or computer is down has been the norm for at least a couple of decades. Calling for HELP and demanding/expecting an immediate response because they can't get/send EMAIL! Eh, what's up with this, doc?
How about EMAIL! performance? Based on things I'm hearing, I suspect it will not be much longer and we will have to start setting Service Level Agreements as to how long an email should take to get from the Sender to Recipient - in nanoseconds. Can you spell CA-ching?
Actually, if you ponder my earlier observation about EMAIL! replacing the telephone - it all starts to make sense. Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) is probably the most reliable technology in the world, at least in the US of A. Pick up the phone and you'll get dial-tone 99.999999% of the time. If a storm does knock it down....it is usually the last utility to go down and the first service to come back up. Thus, if people have subconsciously elevated EMAIL! to the same level as that of telephone service - "Holy heart failure, Batman! - Robin."
When one stops to consider what is required to get an email from PC to PC and/or PDA these days, you might think we're headed into an EMAIL! meltdown/depression. As energy cost keep climbing, telework becomes reality, and SPAM continues to double - WE could be headed into the perfect EMAIL! Storm.
What's your EMAIL! survival plan?
